Are You Retaining Fluid?

Do your legs, feet or fingers swell during the day?

There is often a simple solution to fluid retention. Drink more water! This may seem counter intuitive but it’s true. To be healthy most people need at least 2 litres of pure water each day, plus other fluids from fruits, vegetables, teas etc.

If you don’t drink enough during the day, your urine will be bright or dark yellow. A low water intake means your kidneys won’t be able to complete their filtering tasks during the day(eliminating toxins from your blood) and they will try to make up for lost time at night, resulting in frequent trips to the loo when you should be sleeping!

A rule of thumb for your total daily fluid intake: Most people need a litre of fluid for every 20 kilos of body weight (but no more than 5 litres per day).

If you’re drinking plenty of pure water but still retaining fluid, it may be because the water you’re drinking is not actually going to where it’s needed. Instead, it’s passing through you without being properly absorbed by your tissues. This means many of your cells will be experiencing a ‘drought’ and your body will again be prompted to retain fluid. A pinch or two of salt, a few slices of ginger or a squeeze of lemon in each glass can help water be more easily absorbed into tissues where it’s needed, bringing fresh nutrients to cells and flushing out toxins and debris.

Try sparking, still, carbonated, hot, warm or cold water – as long as you are drinking plenty, your body will be happier and healthier!
